Goss's swordplay is a sight to behold. Again, tentacles seem to dominate the film. More is made this time of Hellboy's relationship with his pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz. What's a fan to do while waiting for Guillermo Del Toro's sequel to his first movie about the nether region's favorite son with a human heart. Original-Comic-Art Hellboy Sword of Stones In "Sword of Stones", Hellboy was investigating an assignment in Japan when he magically transported to a demon world of Japanese mythos as he touched an artifact, the Sword of Stones. Flash forward forty years, and this is no Dark Knight. He's come a long way from his days in Bros, huh? Like Rocky Balboa, Hellboy has become the reluctant hero turned celebrity. The demon world is inhabited by fantastic lores of Japanese myths. Original-Comic-Art Of course, Hellboy refused and as he made his way back to the mansion, Hecates chased him for a final, bonecrushing showdown. The DVDs contain extras where the creators discussed the making the films and the decision-making behind any deviation from the comic books. I was impressed in a scene where she calmly repeats her mantra whilst engulfing herself in flames, hoping to control it this time.
Long dormant, a crown split into three pieces stops them from being released, and you just know we're about to see Red take them on as an older, wise-cracking, pistol wielding superhero dude. Original-Comic-Art Hellboy Blood & Iron Hellboy and the BPRD were assigned to investigate a haunted house which was recently purchased by an entrepreneuring mogul who planned to use the house for a ghost-chasing TV reality show. Some of the dragons already began stirring and nearby countrysides were terrorized. At least Del Toro has improved on the original, but this is by no means a classic franchise yet. The Golden Army is gloriously realised in CGI. Original-Comic-Art Practically dumbfounded by the teleportation, Hellboy, at the advice of the first creature he met - a mysterious talking fox, travelled eastward as he attempted his way back home. Meanwhile, back on earth, Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman contended with the precursors to the coming of the demon brothers. After a very brief history lesson, Hellboy 2 begins with a bespectacled John Hurt telling the young Hellboy a story. For the non-comic book readers, this is the first time we get a feel of Liz's awesome power as a pyro as she was forced to confront the dragon on the island. Original-Comic-Art Del Toro has given a soap opera feel to the dialogue between Red and Liz, in fact between most of the central characters, and the comedy behind these scenes does not work for me. It's just not enough though.
There were loose strings between the countess, her servant who was a former village priest, and Professor Broom. Why? Faced with recent efforts from Marvel, this doesn't fare too well. Original-Comic-Art He is the highlight of the movie for me, a Crow-like villain, resisting the urge to ham it up. The two films take on very different tones, one of the fantastic, the other of the gothic. He seems content to make movies to the standard of Pan's Labyrinth in between these bigger, studio-driven comic book adaptations. Sure, Red cracks wise like he did the first time, but it wears thin. Original-Comic-Art A third could be the making of this series, but the second one doesn't quite cut it all the way. Their decision to separate Hellboy from Abe and Liz tho' is workable. Kids will love this style, but I'm not sure. True to many vampire films, "Blood & Iron" took us through an intricate gothic story of vengeance and obsession. Original-Comic-Art There's clearly more bang for your buck on this outing than the first - it doesn't have that stilted feel - more fluid this time, easier.
